Protecting Our Home: A Guide to Sustainable Coastal Travel in Portugal

We, Bo and Francisco, the founders of Conscious Portugal, are surfers at heart. The sea has been our second home. Conscious Portugal's older sibling, is SeaBookings, a portal that connects sea lovers with local and authentic sea tour providers around the world.
We grew up riding waves along the Algarve (Bo) and Lisbon (Francisco) coasts. Back then, the beaches were quieter. Surfing was not yet the booming industry it is today. We remember empty lineups and clean and quiet beaches.
We have watched Portugal become a top travel destination. We love sharing our beautiful country but we also see the pressure tourism puts on the coastlines we love. We want to ensure that future generations can enjoy these same waves in the way we did. That is why sustainable coastal travel is so important.
We welcome you to enjoy Portugal's stunning ocean. But we ask you to do it consciously. Here is our guide to enjoying the coast while protecting it.
What is "Conscious" Coastal Travel?
It is simple. It means enjoying the ocean without harming it. It means your visit benefits the local community.
It is about respect. You respect the nature, the culture, and the people who live here year-round. You leave only footprints in the sand.
Where to Go: Best Eco-Locations
Portugal’s coast is long and varied. Here are areas known for natural beauty and a growing eco-consciousness.
The "Wild" Western Algarve Forget the crowded tourist strips in the central Algarve. Head west. The Costa Vicentina is a protected natural park. The cliffs are dramatic. The beaches are raw. The towns, like Sagres or Aljezur, feel authentic. Development here is limited by law, which protects the environment.
The Lisbon Coast & Silver Coast Just north of Lisbon, you find incredible natural beauty. Ericeira is Europe's first World Surf Reserve. The community there is dedicated to protecting their waves and marine ecosystems. Further north, Peniche offers rugged coastlines and a strong connection to the fishing heritage.
Activities: Surf and Yoga with Purpose
You probably came here for the water. Connecting with the ocean is good for the soul.
Sustainable Surfing Surfing makes you appreciate nature. But choose your providers carefully. Look for local surf schools that employ local instructors. Ask if they organize beach cleanups. Some innovative schools even use eco-friendly wooden boards instead of standard foam ones.
Seaside Yoga Yoga and surfing are perfect partners. Both require balance and focus. Many coastal spots offer beach yoga. Practicing on a clifftop overlooking the Atlantic is magical. It deepens your connection to the environment you want to protect.
Where to Stay: Choosing Sustainable Retreats
Where you sleep has a big impact. Avoid massive resort chains. Instead, look for places that care.
Choose small guesthouses run by local families. Your money stays in the community.
Better yet, book a dedicated eco-retreat. These places actively reduce their footprint. They might use solar energy. They often have gardens to grow their own food. They recycle water. Staying here is a vote for a greener future.
5 Simple Rules for the Conscious Traveler
You don't need to be perfect. We believe that small actions add up.
- Bring a reusable water bottle. Tap water in Portugal is safe to drink. Avoid buying plastic bottles.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen. Standard chemical sunscreens harm marine life. Look for mineral-based options (zinc or titanium).
- Respect the dunes. Never walk on sand dunes. They are fragile ecosystems that protect the land from the sea. Use marked wooden pathways.
- Eat local seafood. If you eat fish, choose locally caught, seasonal species at small restaurants.
- The "Take 3 for the Sea" Rule. Whenever you leave the beach, pick up three pieces of trash, even if it isn't yours.
We want you to fall in love with the Portuguese coast, just as we did as kids (and as our kids do). By traveling sustainably, you help keep it beautiful forever.
